Today we drive into the Canadian Rockies. The mountains are completely covered with clouds so the views are not that spectacular. When we arrive at Rogers pass we see how much snow actually has fallen in the last months (they tell us Canada has had an extreme winter) – we have to walk in a corridor of snow to enter the visitor centre. We decide to drive to Lake Louise. Once we passed Rogers Pass, the sun is shining brightly and we can now see how impressive the Rockies actually are. When the sun shines on those snow covered mountains, you really can only look at it in complete silence. We head towards Lake Louise and find ourselves a spot on the year round open National Park campground. Tents can not stay at this campground, because bears may attack people sleeping in a tent. From the 15th of May there is a special campground for tents, completely electrified.
We hiked to Lake Louise, famous for is blue colour but now covered with white snow. The trail is only 30cm broad– if you step aside your feet ends 75cm deeper in the snow. While we are walking we realise we have fresh bread in our backpack. This is like swimming in a lake full of salties or walking in a park full of lions and elephants. Bears smell food miles away. After reading the safety procedures, we realise how stupid we are. When we arrive at the lake – safely - we decide to throw the bread in a bear proof bin – we do not want to take any risks.
The lake is bathing in the sun, only 5 minutes later the clouds just fall into lake and it begins to snow heavily. When we arrive back in the town, the sun is shining brightly. Weather in the mountains is really unpredictable.
We finallly head to Banff a town in the middle of the Rockies. The National park Campground is really huge - it can accommodate more then 800 tents and trailers. Now we can only use the winter camping area - which looks more to a parking lot then a campground. But we find a most wonderful spot where we have a view on the impressive mountains around us. We take several hikes, one of them is to the summit of Tunnel mountain, 1690 meter high - only a 3 km hike. On top of it you can imagine the view you get. The call this mountain tunnel mountain because they wanted to dig a tunnel right through this mountain, only leter they decide to move the track around the mountain, but since that day they call this small mountain tunnel moutain. We've also hiked to the spring, the smell is just awfull (bad eggs) - you can't imagine that people use to bathe in this water. It's even lightly radio active. Can't be healthy. Maybe that's why they closed it for the public. Meanwhile the sun is shining brightly and we are even a little bit sun burned.
We have driven 1500 km and the mororhome has consumed 400 liter gazoline. Luckely our motorhome at home only would have consumed 150 liter. Are we glad about this!
